Doesn't look like an old film at all... too much hd and too much 5d.

Here's what I was looking at earlier today...

http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/08/r...entury_ago.html

Might be useful as a reference smile.gif Notice the lovely grain (and the truckload of chrom. aberration lol) <3 Try with some of the proper kodak film grain presets in nuke/flame...

I don't think the Prokudin-Gorskii photos can be used as a guide for old film looks - they were taken on a large format plate glass camera with gigantic resolution, whereas older film stocks are on much smaller negatives and in colour at least suffered from enlarged grain until the 1960s (I think, might have been slightly earlier). Also the Chromatic aberration on the Prokudin-Gorskii images is caused by each one being a composite of three photos (one for each of red, green and blue channels) and each channel had it's own lens which understandably did not exactly align with the others, so the further the away from the central focus you get the more aberration is noticeable. They are stunning images however - but do remember that you are looking at heavily Photoshopped retouched versions - the first time I saw them there was aalso a link to the original plates so that people could download each channel as a massive TIFF file and comp them together and send them back to the Museum that owns them, so I downloaded one at random and it was really difficult to fit the channels together because of misalignment and damage to the negatives. Great reference though, but I doubt they looked that stunning when they were originally projected for the Tsar at hte end of the 19th century. Prokudin-Gorskii was a genius to come up with a way of making colour photography that early.

Yes - the important stuff like next week's winning lottery numbers! Oh and anything about sport or cars or fashion or pop music - but I certainly try to know something about anything interesting smile.gif

Actually I just remembered something else about those photos that might not be obvious to everyone - when Prokudin-Gorskii built his camera to take those images, there was no way of printing them! He knew that he could record colour images by using three black and white negatives, each one with a red, green or blue filter over the lens and then combine the three negatives (actually glass plates) together and shine white light through them and project the image onto a wall to see it, but it would never have aligned as well as what we see due to the physical thickness of the glass plates - he would only have seen a very chromatically aberrated image with lots of fringing and halo issues - although that did indeed astound the Tsar at the time. Prokudin-Gorskii believed that one day it would be possible to print his images so that many people could see them, but he didn't live long enough to see colour photography become a technology that could be reproduced - but that didn't stop him making these images because he knew that someone would work out how to print in colour at some point in the future. That just shows the level of dedication he had to his art, and also what a visionary he was! How many of us could work on an art form for a large part of our lives without being able to see it at it's fullest potential, but kept working on it in the hope that one day someone else would find a way to realise our dreams?

thanks a lot aidan! there's not a day that goes by where i dont think 'feck 3d' haha. but it's a love/hate relationship. and as such, here's a bit of progress with my personal 3d environment, started laying down some basic shaders and textures

and the 'noir' version biggrin.gif

a lot of artifacts, and i'm planning on adding some more fill lights too, to bring out the texture details

Yum. This is lovely, only crits is perhaps have a little grunge in the way of scratches around the pivot point of the fan.
The lighting is beautiful, nice colour choice.

Keep going biggrin.gif

Nice! The little white box? and the ashtray? stick some fag holder type divots in it. Cloth could have more weight maybe. What is it? The table could do with some more sandwich( stripes) or just be thinner. All looks very clean but then maybe i just like dirty stuff.

Hey Miggles,

Looking quite good in terms of light and shadow.

What the above chaps said about the white box and the ashtray is valid as well...

I'd only add that composition-wise you have no 'white-space' and focal point... it looks really busy... a bit like a train to London in 8 o'clock in the morning...
Sort these out and you'll have a nice picture smile.gif

Yes, looks great but I totally agree with Dennis about the lack of space in the composition - you might be able to cure it with some of your trademark extremely shallow DOF though smile.gif But Dennis' opinion about having some empty space to balance the busy bits is the better way to go about it - especially with the high contrast areas added by the light through the blinds.
