Out of curiosity is all this math genuinely the common thought processes in the industry? Or even for some students maybe? I thought they adjust the topology by eye or use various third party programs like TopoGun

That is the best thing I have seen in 2012

Also watch this tutorial, its made in 3DSmax but you can do the same in Maya. Well worth watching and then trying his techniques and then start repeating each exercise for a few hours, then a solid session for 8 hours straight and then just when you are warmed up, repeat again and again and again and then just when you think you have mastered edgelooping start all over.
You will never get the perfect edge loop but unless you fail you will never learn.

Yes.I thought they adjust the topology by eye
At least in games industry, in my experience topology for subdivision modelling is like ... common sense and experience. Maybe different for character artists where poles and topology are mort important though.
